For thirteen generations, the male descendants of Nicholas I have brought gifts to the children of the world, venturing forth once a year from the Northern Fortress in which the gifts are made, defying dark, terrifying forces to spread bounty and good will to the various peoples of the earth. But now Nicholas
XIII has fallen in battle to his ancient foe, the dragon Furnaceheart. Since Nicholas is keeper of the enchanted sword Yulestar, his death means that the spells protecting the Northern Fortress from discovery will fade, unless his heir returns to use Yulestar to rekindle them.

And Nicholas XIII has no male heir. There is only his daughter, Nicole.

As Furnaceheart lays siege with his army of minions to the ice-gates of the Northern Fortress, Nicole takes up Yulestar and mounts Wotan, her winged reindeer, vowing to defeat Furnaceheart and continue her father's work.

Will the line of Nicholas end? Will the Northern Fortress finally fall to a dragon who apparently cannot die? And above all, will Nicole be too late in realizing the secret she does not know she knows?
